Organic In RI: The Good Earth

My sister has been telling me about The Good Earth for a while and I finally got there this week, which might have something to do with the fact that I've overspent my Whole Foods budget thru the year 2025 at least. I took it as a good sign then that when I pulled up to 1800 Scituate Ave. late Wednesday afternoon, I saw this:

I'm a fan...Whole Foods

Post Whole Food siting, it became pretty clear that this was not only an organic farm (Hate to break it to you, but just because you're buying veggies and fruits at a local farm stand, it does NOT mean you're getting organic produce. I feel like this is a common misconception.) and gardening center (The only organic gc in the entire state I hear. Or read on their website. Whatevs.), but it's also completely and totally adorable!

As you can see from the photos above, their Greenhouse alone makes you want to channel your inner Martha Stewart - only without that part where she went to jail for insider trading (I'd be remiss here if I didn't quote Cameron Diaz's character Carly in Judd Apatow's The Other Woman when she declares that Martha 'handled prison like a boss!' Yup She did.) Anyway, if you garden, or aspire to, I'd definitely recommend putting The Good Earth on your 'to go list' asap. (If we're being really honest here - and I think we are - they had me at ORGANIC.)

Next stop was the farm house where they have their in-season produce - think peppers (more about those in a second), potatoes, onions, etc. Again, the photos don't lie - the interior of the house is equally as adorbs as the greenhouse. They also had lots of other neat stuff for sale including a refrigerated area with local eggs (Not ashamed to admit I didn't buy any eggs because carrying them around would have gotten in the way of my being able to snap pics with my I-Phone.) and gift-y items (like the sachets and patches for your jeans above). I ended up buying a big bunch of potatoes and peppers from Joyce, the co-owner, who was extremely kind and told me how they've been in business for over 15 years, which impressed the heck out of me.  And I'm guessing that that bunch of veggies I picked up would have probably cost me 2 - 3X as much at a traditional market.

Some of the peppers for sale this week at The Good Earth in Hope, RI

Luckily, I had someone with way more talent in the kitchen (I can boil water, scramble an egg, and make toast. The End. ) cook up everything and it was....delicious. So, it's five big stars and a highly recommend for The Good Earth, especially if you're trying to eat organic and local, but still want to have some money left in your wallet.

Ciao For Now,

Patty J
