People Drive Hours For The Chocolate Cake At These Rhode Island Restaurants

There’s chocolate cake and then there is the iconic Death By Chocolate Cake at Gregg’s.

People have been known to drive hours for (and write poems about) this luscious six layer dessert topped with dark choc frosting and a thick (side) layer of choc morsels.

There are also quite a few bakers online trying to replicate it at home which is yet another testament to how popular this layer cake continues to be.

One of my aunts apparently used to bake cake for Gregg’s back in the day too, by the way. (I only know this because my father told me and he — and she — have both passed away, so I don’t have any other details to share.)

Now, I didn’t drive 2 or 3 hours, but I did visit 2 Gregg’s locations this week — North Kingstown and Warwick (the other 2 are in Providence and East Providence) — and the pieces of this cake I ordered were both incredibly delish: I mean, gotta appreciate that kind of CONSISTENCY in this day and age.

From where I stand, it’s just so comforting to know that this cake has not changed at all over the years; it is still a moist, flavorful and completely decadent treat that is, in my humble opinion, worth the splurge.

Couldn’t finish the slices I ordered, but think for those who do, there is some sort of special recognition. (Or at least I overheard a conversation at a nearby table in NK to that effect, lol.)

You can grab a slice for $9.29 or a whole cake for $42.99. Wanna win new friends or potential in-laws over? Bring them one of these cakes!

Reason to rewatch a 90’s classic? Someone told me yesterday that she associates it (FONDLY) with the chocolate cake that Bruce (Bruce, Bruce, BRUCE!) eats in that pivotal scene on stage with Miss Trunchbulll in the 1996 movie Matilda.

In addition, the service at both locations was quite good, too.

In addition to the cake, I ordered a tuna salad on rye with a side of cole slaw and a hot coffee at the NK location. The sandwich was a generously sized, tasty and filling. Another reason to revisit these classic Rhode Island eateries known for comfort food.

Also: Last night, the hubs and I sat in their Tavern space at the Warwick restaurant and he loved it because of the (wait, for it) large screen tv’s playing the game.
