Suddenly Going Shoeless At Home Seems Like A Great Idea & 2 Rhode Island Stores For Cozy Socks

At my house, we’re not letting anyone in.

We’ve also gone shoeless.

It’s something I plan on running with once this quarantine is over and done.

To be honest, prior to this minute in time, announcing that we were a shoeless house seemed like a lot to ask of friends and family.

I mean, nobody wants to be that person.

The Tatum O’Neal episode (season 6, number 9, to be exact) of Sex & The City in particular comes to mind as a cautionary tale.

Back in 2003, Tatum played Kyra, a friend of Carrie’s who insists that everyone attending the baby shower at her apartment leave their footwear at the door.

Of course Carrie’s coveted ($485) Manolo’s go missing, and the remainder of the show is a back and forth between the two about getting Kyra (Tatum) to pay for a replacement pair of the stolen silver heels.

Going shoeless also means cleaner floors (just saying)

Well, no shame in being barefoot these days and going forward I think we are all going to be a lot more aware and vocal about what we don’t want to track (or have tracked) into our houses or apartments.

Amirite?

There’s also an oft cited study that was done by a microbiologist over at the University of Arizona in the last few years that found something like 421,000 different units of bacteria on the exterior of a shoe. (You’ve probably come across it if you’ve ever debated whether or not to take the plunge and start telling your circle that you no longer want anyone wearing their loafers or slides inside your home.)

So, what’s clinging to your fave pair right now? In addition to dirt and pollen, there could also be traces of antifreeze, oil, animal waste (ick), and E. Coli (oh nooooooooo!).

There are a few people in my family who prior to the pandemic went the please-leave-your-shoes-at-the-door route, and one thing they did that really helped sell the idea to guests was having a basket of shoe covers or socks (and a bench) set up somewhere near the front door. This way people coming in have a comfy place to sit when putting on either the covers or the fresh socks. (Convenience really makes all the difference when it comes to this kind of an ask!)

And in the interest of supporting local Rhody small businesses (now more than ever), check out NewportSockExchange.com or FrogAndToadStore.com for cozy socks for your crew to don (in the future when we can have company over once again) after removing their kicks.

That’s all for now.

Please take care,

Patty J
