This Iconic PVD Bakery Is Back With Carryout & How Sweet Is That?
Paris has Laduree and Au Petit Versailles du Marais, a charming patisserie and micro cafe in the Le Marais district of Paris.
NYC has several Laduree outposts (one which Duchess Meghan famously visited when in the city for her baby shower thrown by close friend Serena Williams) and celebrated spots for cakes such as Two Little Red Hens and Bourke St. Bakery.
And our Providence?
It has Pastiche, the French inspired bakery and cafe which first opened its doors on Spruce Street on Fed Hill (a stone’s throw from another legendary RI eatery, Caserta’s Pizza) back in 1983.
Known for its delectable fruit tarts, carrot cakes and butterscotch bourbon creme brûlée, it’s the place where locals and Rhody transplants would — prior to the shutdown — steal away to on any given afternoon to treat themselves to something sweet. (Do people still say playing hooky anymore?)
Or where people would take any out-of-staters they were wanting to seriously impress.
It’s the coffee and dessert (platonic) date that sends a clear message to your out-of-town relatives, old friends or work related acquaintances, pretty much saying: “See, Providence really does have outstanding food!”
This scenario also might have been preceded by a multi-course dinner at either Al Forno, Bacaro or perhaps Capital Grille which started in PVD btw.

It’s also a space that up until this past March (the beginning of all this, if you will) was often Instagrammed from. It was on the local foodie radar for sure. Make no mistake, though, it’s never ever been dependent upon social media attention or dare I say buzz to maintain a culinary allure that continues to this day.

The marvelous news is that, as of last week, Pastiche has reopened for carryout orders.
So, yes, you can get your fav fruit tart or chocolate raspberry cake once again. Only this time around, it’s gotta be on a to-go basis.
Until they can reopen, and you can once again meet your bff for coffee and cake in front of the fire place on a cool winter day (they’re one of the only cafes in the area that I know of with a working fireplace btw), check out their site for more details about ordering, et cetera.
