We Brunched At This New Restaurant In One Of RI's Most Underrated Downtowns

Mention Westerly and a lotta people will come back with an anecdote about or recommendation for Watch Hill.

Or maybe Misquamicut.

The thing is Downtown Westerly has so many terrific places!

It doesn’t get nearly enough love online, in my humble opinion.

Pre-everything-going-on-the-last-two-years, one of my brothers had gone to see a band at The Knickerbocker (billed as a “music center”) and also hit a cigar bar in the vicinity and he just had THE BEST time.

Circa this Spring, the bookstore continues to thrive (the Savoy is the crown jewel of the whole entire neighborhood as far as I’m concerned), there’s a brand NEW Knead Doughnuts outpost, the local theater has been completely renovated and has reopened featuring both live performances and screenings of classic movies, and Christina Ltd. is looking lovelier than ever. (See photos above.)

And there are beaucoup restaurants.

Speaking of which, yesterday we actually tried out a new-ish one on Canal Street called the Surf Cantina.

It’s a lively eatery, whimsically decked out with boards up on the walls and a definite 1960’s influence as far as the seating, light fixtures, and so on. (Love to see! I mean, it’s refreshing to see some creativity and different concepts on the food scene.)

The drinks and food all have these cheeky and surf inspired names, too.

We ordered coffee and tea on Sunday afternoon, but the cocktail menu was appealing and lotsa 20 and 30 somethings around us were imbibing.

You almost expect to see a 21st century version of (1959, the year the first Gidget movie was released) James Darren and Sandra Dee pop up on the scene.

The brunch menu was a little meat heavy for our taste, but truth be told, we were able to get modified versions of their Cantina Scramble and Off The Lip Waffle Sandwich.

Both dishes were hot and delish, and shoutout to our wait person who did a swell job.

I think this place is going to be hopping later this spring and throughout the summer.
