A Cute Lakefront Cottage In Coventry, Rhode Island You Can Rent This Summer
Last weekend we had the pleasure of staying at a secluded waterfront cottage located on an Audubon property. Having hiked at the Maxwell Mays Wildlife Refuge in the past, I was delighted to learn that the charming dwelling we saw across the pond was available to rent.

Known for his depictions of New England and numerous Yankee magazine covers, Rhode Island native Maxwell Mays was also Past President of the Providence Art Club. The late artist donated about 300 acres to Audubon for this wildlife refuge in 2010.

During our stay, we enjoyed taking the canoe out on Carr Pond. (A canoe and kayak are available with a stay at the cottage.) We also hiked the over three miles of trails that traverse the woods each day. Mostly, we were content to sit on the deck, in the screened porch or on the dock, just taking in all the magnificent sights and sounds that come with being out in nature.

Be sure to bring binoculars! The amount of wildlife we spotted was IMPRESSIVE: so many orioles, chipmunks, phoebes, a great blue heron, rabbits, a goshawk, ducks, a pileated woodpecker and a scarlet tanager. Out on the deck at night, we heard tree frogs and even barred owls calling back and forth to each other.

We happened to be the first renters of the season this year. With room to sleep five, an equipped kitchen and outdoor grill, plenty of books and board games, this cottage is ideal for family getaways. This two bedroom cottage is available for rental from May until October. Some dates are still available this year, but if you are unable to book a stay this year don't worry, you may be able to join an art workshop at this location. Audubon announced plans last year to offer art workshops onsite at the Maxwell Mays Wildife Refuge.
We found ourselves saying," the next time we come here..." all weekend long!
