A Moonlight Kayak Tour Of This Marvelous Rhode Island Village

Social media feeds were recently flooded with pictures of the Strawberry Moon. Some terrific images of the bright pink moon over NYC, Boston and even Stonehenge were shared.

I experienced the Strawberry Moon sighting from a remarkable vantage point Wednesday night - in a kayak on Wickford Harbor.

I first learned about moonlight guided kayak tours from one of my colleagues who insisted, “You have to try it!”  I am so glad I did!

Our guide, Lisa, led our group of kayakers from the Kayak Centre launch at the end of Brown Street under Hussey Bridge, through Wickford Cove, out into Wickford Harbor and around Cornelius Island

She safely guided us when there were other watercrafts navigating nearby.

Along the way, Lisa told us about the Poplar Point Lighthouse being recently lit after 142 years!

We also learned about Cornelius Island, where the Wickford Oil & Guano Company was located.  (Yes, guano!) The uninhabited island was once home to a family with 21 children.

During the Moonlight Paddle, we saw (and heard) osprey, egrets, ducks, rabbits, great blue herons and a fish leapt up to greet us!

Lots of friendly folks on their boats greeted us, too.

There have also been deer and fox sighted on these types of excursions offered by the Kayak Centre.

The Kayak Centre in Wickford offers a range of guided tours throughout the warmer months.

The next moonlight paddle is scheduled for July 10.

I am looking forward to seal tours and fall foliage tours later this year.

You can also enjoy kayak rentals, classes, including stand up paddleboards, (SUP with you?) and kayak fishing.

Check out the Kayak Centre for all the gear and accessories necessary to plan your own adventures on the water.
