The folks over at The Good Earth on Scituate Avenue in Cranston recently announced that they are teaming up with the Southside Community Land Trust (SCLT), an organization that essentially brings together people who want to farm (or learn how to) with landowners wanting to make their property available for planting, growing, harvesting, et cetera.

What exactly does this mean for those of us who are longtime fans of this charming organic farm and garden center, you ask?

Well, the good news is twofold — first, everything will STILL be grown without pesticides (and any of that other stuff you def don’t want to be ingesting) and secondly, there will be a lot more of it! (By the way, they are the only certified organic garden center in all of Rhode Island.)

So, yes, this does indeed mean more variety and larger quantities of locally grown veggies for us shop, take home, and cook up.

Last I checked, they were anticipating being able to offer sugar snap peas, kale, onions, scallions, spinach, pickling cucumbers, radishes, parsley, and cilantro this week. Locals are also very much looking forward to corn this year, too.

One sartorial and highly practical tip I can offer from personal experience is to make sure to leave your cute shoes at home. Do try wearing something more on the sturdy side. I mean, it’s a veritable oasis there, but dirt is NOT a friend of any footwear that’s remotely delicate or dressy. (Consider this a gentle reminder from someone who’s ruined more than a few pairs over these last few years and continues to grieve their untimely end.)

Also, someone who cooks for a living, and who shall remain nameless, just told me that their eggplant is the best! Kind of a huge deal, right?
