Sneakers Or (Cringe) Are The Kids Still Calling Them Kicks?

All Aboard These Peddle Cars In Portsmouth

Text your sporty friend who’s always twisting your arm to go hiking or kayaking or grab your significant other who isn’t too crazy about the beach (I know, I know…) and make a date for Rail Explorers, Rhode Island Division this summer.

First off, be sure to wear your sneakers and comfy clothes (NOT the time to channel your inner Midge from The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) and skip the spin class that morning because you'll be pedaling their signature Rail Explorer cars (there are 2 options: one model seats 2 and the other seats up to 4) 6 miles down some “retired” railroad tracks (12 miles if you chose the roundtrip option, more about that in a second) with some spectacular views of Narragansett Bay and the Mount Hope Bridge.

Stick With It!

The first time I rode the rails, with my friend S., we had originally planned and paid for the 6 mile, one way trip.

Then a rep from Rail Explorers asked if anyone would be interested in a taking a FREE ride back to the base.

(For the record, if you purchase the one way trip, they do shuttle you back to the starting point where your car is patiently waiting.) 

Blame it on my competitive side — it’s a family thing — as well as the fact that the 2nd leg was suddenly complimentary (pretty sure that it's priced at an additional $75 online but they may be running specials too, you never know), but I jumped at the opportunity.

And that's how we ended up actually logging 12 miles on the tour (not for everyone, we were pretty proud to have pushed thru), which we celebrated immediately following with a delicious dinner that included pasta at a restaurant not very far from the scene of our pedaling truimph. 

They're only open for biz Thursday thru Sunday and tickets sell out quite quickly, so plan accordingly.
