I am Traer Scott, a Providence based photographer and author of 12 books. I have been in love with photography since I took my first darkroom class at age 10. I have always gravitated towards creative endeavors and experimented with painting, sculpture and audio production before choosing photography as a career, but in the end, I’m not sure I would have been happy doing anything else!

Some Of My Books

Some Of My Books

Pretty much all of my work focuses on animals in one way or another. With most of my books, my aim is to increase compassion and understanding of non-human animals through education and appreciation. My newest book is a little different though. Actually, it’s a lot different!

Goodbye Salad Days; Kevin Faces Adulthood is my first foray into humor books. The book features handmade dioramas as the backdrop for hamster Kevin's stumbling and humorous attempts to navigate a quarter life crisis. Dealing with a bleak love life, a dead-end job, his first gray hairs and a blooming existential crisis, Kevin is stuck between youth and whatever comes next. You can pick up a signed copy of Goodbye Salad Days at Books on the Square in Providence!

FAVORITES

I have lived in Fox Point for over 20 years, and I LOVE my neighborhood. Most of my favorite places are within walking distance from my house.

FOOD

I’m vegan and my husband and daughter are vegetarian, so we feel incredibly lucky to live just blocks from Plant City. Honestly, I never thought that in my lifetime, there would be plant based food halls!! This is definitely my favorite spot for dinner, there are such incredible flavors.

I often meet friends for lunch at Veggie Fun (or at least I did before the pandemic and will continue to soon). I love the variety on their menu and of course it’s all vegan, though I think anyone who likes Asian food can find something they like there.

For anytime treats, my daughter and I are frequent visitors to Like No Udder on Ives Street. Before they had a shop, I used to follow the soft serve truck around the city! LNU has great dairy free iced cream and other vegan treats like candy bars and jerky.

I also have a terrible soft spot for pastries and Blush Bakeshop is AMAZING. By far the best vegan pastries I have ever had. Their “cheese” danish is to die for.

SHOPPING

I don’t get to do as much shopping as I would like, but we are always up for a trip to Books on the Square. They have an inspiring and fun general book selection, and their childrens/young adult section is phenomenal. My daughter asks for BOTS gift certificates for her birthday.

For buying gifts, I love Peaceable Kingdom and Lore, also in Fox Point.

SUMMER

Like most Rhode Islanders we love to go to the beach. I am particularly fond of Watch Hill and Little Compton, though all RI beaches are amazing! I love history and Newport never ceases to be magical, but I like it best in the fall when it’s still warm but a little quieter.

We also have a public art installation in our neighborhood called 10,000 suns which I look forward to every year. In August and September, the sunflower field is in bloom and we love to go and bask in the glow of the cheerful flowers, as well as take a few photos for Instagram (along with the rest of the city).

FALL

Personally, I can’t wait for fall. It’s my favorite season. I love apple and pumpkin picking, Jack O Lantern Spectacular and all things Halloween!
