We Toured This Charming Charlestown, Rhode Island Restaurant That Just Reopened

Yes, The Tavern Is Up And Running!

Foodies, Rhody history fans, and anyone who cherishes time in Southern RI will want to bookmark the General Stanton Inn on Old Post Road in Charlestown.

The hubs and I toured the space the other day and wow, just wow!

For starters, the Tavern on the property is already up and running for dinner Wednesday thru Saturday — and on Sundays, from 11am to 9pm for brunch, lunch, and din din. (Ps and btw, we are planning on motoring over for brunch in September; I hear that the menu is inspired by early American food and drink which sounds intriguing.)

What A Glow-Up! The new owners are putting the finishing touches on the Inn (it is very close to being done) and we were floored by the renovation: They have achieved that all important balance between preserving the old world charm (the original structure dates all the way back to 1740) whilst adding all the modern conveniences that 21st century guests want and need. For example, the bathrooms have all been completely redone and are so pristine looking.

It’s shaping up to ultimately be a delightful and delicious destination for weddings and other joyous occasions. (The “beach” guest rooms off to the side are completely ADORABLE, just saying.)

American history and pop culture buffs alike will LOVE that since its earliest days, the General Stanton has played host to the famous and the infamous. Helloooo, Tallulah Bankhead (her most well known movie circa now would have to be Alfred Hitchcock’s Lifeboat, so you will want to text the TCM superfan in your circle) and Al Capone (Chicago mob boss and the original Scarface)!

Also, Teddy Roosevelt, Benny Franklin, and Thomas Jefferson. And, since the General was known to be great friends with founding father George Washington, most historians would agree that papa GW probably stayed there as well.
