The Superfood This Holistic Dr Wants You To Try & The Surprising Reason Why
This time of the year, Chia Pets start making their way into holiday displays. The chia seed, when sprouted, grows hair on Chia Pets, but did you know it's packed with nutrients like Omega-3s and can help you lose weight? Who knew a secret weight loss tool was in the box this whole time?
Chia seeds are literally one of the healthiest fods on the planet. These tiny, nutrient rich power houses contain a surprising amount of plant based protein. One ounce of chia seeds (about 2 tablespoons) contains 139 calories, 4 grams of protein, 9 grams fat, 12 grams carbohydrates, and 11 grams of fiber, plus vitamins and minerals like antioxidants and calcium.
The fiber in chia seeds is one of its big strengths when it comes to weight loss. One of the characteristics that make chia seeds so unique is that they can absorb up to 10 times their own weight in water. Because of this, they may help you feel fuller longer, slow cravings, and help prolong hydration.
As another bonus for your gut health, the insoluable fiber acts as a prebiotic that feeds friendly gut bacteria and ferments into short-chain fatty acids to support gut health. You need PREbiotics to help your PRObiotics work.
So next time someone gives you a Chia Pet, eat the seeds and let your niece paint the sculpture! You can also find chia seeds in bigger quantities in most markets. One way to eat them is mixed into smoothies or added to protein shakes. Chia pudding (Think Tapioca, but much healthier.) makes a great breakfast or snack!
Here's a simple recipe for Pumpkin Pie Spiced Chia Pudding:
- 3 tablespoons chia seeds
- 1/2 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice blend
- 1/2 cup hot water, nut or seed milk (I love to use hemp milk which adds even more Omega-3's!)
- 1/4 teaspoon vanilla (optional)
In a medium bowl, mix the chia seeds with the pumpkin pie spice. Pour hot water, nut or seed milk, and vanilla (if desired) over the mixture. Mix well and let it sit about 20-30 minutes to firm up. If you'd like, you can top with a drizzle of honey, toasted nuts, coconut flakes or berries. Enjoy!
