3 Spots In This Serene Rhode Island Town That You'll Want To See This Christmas

Come spring and summer amateur and professional photographers alike will be flocking to Jamestown to take snaps of that darn Insta famous windmill in the historic district. Search it online and you will stumble upon oodles and oodles of images. The thing is, though, it’s also a wonderful spot if, like me, you’re looking for a peaceful little rhode trip this month. (Helloooo, holiday stressers!) With this in mind, I’ve put together a short list of 3 of my must visits in the 02835 right now if you need to runaway from it all for a few hours.

I first discovered the existence of this Christmas-ified shanty overlooking the harbor and the NPT Pell Bridge by way of a search of the Airbnb app a few years ago. Last Christmas I actually made it over in person for a photo. And this past weekend someone (?) finally moved the ginormous crane that had prior to been blocking its frontage (shakes fist in the air). After picking up some takeout sandwiches at East Ferry Deli (there’s something for everyone on their pretty extensive menu), you can stroll over to have a looksee.

Next is this vintage fire truck that if you’re lucky you might get to spy transporting Santa around town this week. Otherwise it’s usually parked out front of 50 Narragansett Avenue. After spotting it last December, I’d wondered how exactly a 1947 Dodge f/t emblazoned with Block Island on the hood had ended up in Jamestown. Apparently BI sold it to the retired fire chief for a dollar so it could be part of the Fire Department Memorial Museum there (address above) and one of the local fire fighters then used his own time and money to completely restore it.

The Village Hearth is another local gem that this season is open on a very limited schedule — Sundays only. We tried to get there the other day, but alas were too late. If you’re planning on spending a few hours in town this month, I would suggest trying to get there on a Sunday morning, so that you can pick up some goodies (people have been known to gush about their breads, lattes, and pizzas) from TVH.
