Let’s Indulge In Some 90’s Nostalgia

Old enough to say that I didn’t fully appreciate the 1990’s while they were unfolding: The Music. (RIP Chris Cornell.) The Movies. (I challenge you to rewatch many of the movies that Siskel & Ebert gave mixed reviews to NOW, that’s all I’m sayin.) SOME Of The Style. (Why did I toss out almost all of my vintage Levi’s except for one jacket I bought at a warehouse in Fall River? Big misstep.)

As far as businesses go, there was a diner on Thayer — the far end that’s NOT so commercial — where I would go for cheeseburgers and fries all the time, back when I still ate red meat.

Think it was called Ruby’s.

It’s long gone. (I’d heard Brown bought the owners out and they subsequently moved away.) Another early 90’s East Side business that you may remember from Wickenden Street is back and thought I’d loop you in — because I love a comeback or 2nd act and am betting you probably do too.

Yes, Skylight Bakery is a mother-son business that’s named for the cafe on Wickenden Street that the mom half of the duo ran back in those pre-living-on-our-phones days.

Everything’s made from scratch (so you don’t have to go to the trouble, especially this time of year when you could be at the beach or something) and right now it’s all online orders and farmers market pop-ups.

Not that there’s anything wrong with THAT. I mean, I adore an outdoor market. It’s a marvelous excuse to get out, discover some new RI makers and maybe run into a few of your old favorites.

Also, fresh air.

For the latest from them, and details about ordering and where they’ll be next, you’ll want to follow them on IG @SkylightPVD and check out their site.

As always, please tell ‘em you found out about them via Patty J and PattyJ.com.
